Ritual & Ornament
Pomanders from the Middle Ages to the Rennaissance
Our fascination with the pomander began during our research into the rituals of scent: how fragrance was once worn, carried, and used not only for pleasure but for protection. In the Middle Ages, when disease and foul air were believed to spread through scents, people carried small, intricately crafted orbs filled with aromatic herbs, resins, and spices. These early pomanders were both adornment and amulet: a way to purify the air and shield the wearer from unseen forces.
Olfactory Heritage
By the Renaissance, the pomander evolved into an object of art and devotion. Crafted from silver or gold, often divided into tiny compartments for different scent materials, it hung from chains or was worn close to the heart. Inside, one might find clove, amber, rosemary, or frankincense, ingredients chosen not only for their aroma but for their symbolic and medicinal properties. Fragrance was understood as something alive, connecting the physical and the spiritual, the human and the divine.
At Lingua Planta, we were captivated by this tradition. The idea of perfume as something both intimate and protective, something you carry with you.
Our acorn-shaped pomander is inspired by these early designs: a small, wearable vessel for scent that bridges history and modern ritual. A reminder that the language of plants (and of perfume) has always been a way for humans to navigate the world through beauty, care, and connection.
