Field Notes

Limited-edition batches of scents and scented products composed with rare and precious materials.

What field notes are about

Olfactory studies of the natural world.

Lingua Planta is a collection of perfumes that emerge from our ongoing research into the language of plants.

Field Notes is the archive of our research into our relationship with plants, an ongoing series of limited editions where fragrance, field notes, and observation all serve the same purpose: helping people connect to the living world more deeply.

Each edition begins with an observation in the field; a scent that has caught our attention and pulled us toward a deeper understanding of what scent means in the life of plants. The result; the perfume, together with our observations, is released in small batches, documenting threads of curiosity and discovery as they happen, woven into the daily ritual of wearing perfume.

Behind tomato leaf

Seven years in the making

When Merle began researching plant communication as a design student in 2016, the tomato plant was already there; one of the very first scents that pulled her into this whole line of inquiry. She knew, even then, that a tomato plant perfume would exist one day. It just took seven years to get it right.

For this fragrance, the challenge was to translate the plant's distinct volatile communication into a wearable scent. The living plant's leaves have this uniquely vibrant quality that she tried to capture.

However, the same plant doesn't smell the same twice. Its scent shifts through the season, from a sharp, invigorating bite in early summer to something warmer and sweeter once late summer sets in. Brush the stem from one plant and you might catch something bright and citrusy; brush another of the same variety, and it turns deeper, almost resinous. It's less a single scent than a dialect, a language, and choosing which version to bottle was part of the story we wanted this fragrance to tell.

That's why every 50ml bottle of Tomato Leaf comes with a small piece of that field research tucked inside, a little something from seven years of listening to this plant, yours to discover when your order arrives.

Just as no two growing seasons are ever quite the same, neither are the botanical materials that shape a natural perfume. Sunlight, rainfall, temperature and soil all leave subtle traces in the aromatic molecules of a harvest. Each new batch of perfume remains true to its character, while carrying the unique imprint of the season from which it was created.

If you're discovering this batch of Tomato Leaf for the first time, we recommend beginning with a sample to experience this particular harvest before committing to a full bottle.
